Navigating the Virtual Conference

We’re excited to welcome you to the SER2021 World Conference! SER2021 will not simply be a webinar or meeting – there are many ways for you to network, engage, learn, and socialize on our conference platform, and we’ve built the conference program to be flexible for your schedule and to avoid overwhelming you with content.

This page will walk you through some key conference information and tips for a successful virtual conference experience.

Please visit the Conference FAQ and Program pages for specific information about the conference and schedule. If you are a presenter or session organizer, there is more information available here.

The conference activities are broken into three sections:

May 7 – June 18: Field Trip Fridays – Choose from several field trips each Friday to see how restoration is done around the world or in your region (field trips from the Asia/Australasia region are scheduled for Thursday nights US time/Friday morning in Asia/Australasia).

June 17 – 18: Pre-conference training courses and workshops – These will be delivered live and are open to all registered conference participants as part of your registration fee.

June 21 – 24: Main conference days – The main conference days will be reserved for live interaction through keynote/plenary presentations, live discussion sessions with presenters, and social/networking events. All presentations will be available on-demand in advance of the conference and will not be delivered during the main conference.

  • Log in to the conference platform: this information was sent to you from no-reply@pheedloop.com (keep an eye on your Spam folder). We’ll be using the PheedLoop platform for all conference activities (from field trips to the main conference days, and for post-conference content access). Speakers will also receive access to a separate speaker portal to manage their session information.

  • Create your profile: You can access your profile under the “Account” tab. Add a photo, share some information about yourself, and make sure your time zone is set correctly. (To fully engage with others, leave your visibility and notifications as currently set.)

  • Start building your schedule: Start adding sessions of interest to your schedule using the small plus sign (the full schedule will be available by the end of April; the field trip schedule is currently listed). You can use the same system for keeping track of on-demand content you are interested in watching and social/networking events you’d like to join.

  • Clicking on a session will let you see the session/presentation abstract, information about the speakers, and any files the presenter makes available.

  • Oral presentations, poster presentations, and short videos will be pre-recorded and available on-demand starting June 7. You can access these through the “Channels” tab on the left menu.

  • Live sessions: Click on the “Sessions” tab on the left menu to see the schedule of live sessions (field trips, discussion sessions, keynote/plenary presentations, and social/networking events). A pre-roll video will play until these sessions go live. All live sessions will be recorded and available to watch through the end of July by registered conference participants.

  • You can filter pre-recorded and scheduled sessions by thematic track, format, date, or speaker. You can also search for specific words using the search box.

  • Directions for the Q&A will be shared at the start of live sessions. You can leave questions for presenters on their pre-recorded session through the public chat bar, but you will need to return to see their responses.

  • Some social and networking activities may take place off the PheedLoop platform. These events will still be included in the conference schedule, and you’ll be able to find a link to the appropriate platform in the event description.

  • The “Speakers” tab will let you search and view information on all the conference speakers, as well as see information about which sessions they are participating in. This is a useful way to quickly find someone’s poster or move between their pre-recorded presentation and discussion session.

There are a number of robust options for networking and engagement on the conference platform.

  • Public, context-aware chats are available throughout the platform using the chat bar on the right. These chats are unique to the location, allowing anyone visiting the same location to see posts and engage in public conversations.

  • The right bar will also let you see who is in the same location as you in real-time. This is useful for finding others who are interested in the same presentations or topics to start conversations with.

  • You can enter one-on-one text chats with other conference participants, speakers, or exhibitors.

  • Once you’ve started a text chat, you can move into a one-on-one video call (calls must be accepted by the other person before they start).

  • Up to 25 people at a time can join a video call in the Networking area (see below) or in an exhibitor’s booth.

Networking

  • A list of all conference participants (presenters, exhibitors, attendees, and sponsors) is available under the “Networking” tab.

  • You can search for a specific individual or filter by tag. Clicking on someone’s icon will let you see more information about them and start a chat.

  • You can also join group discussions about a specific topic under the “Groups” tab. Entering a group will let you either engage in a public chat using the right bar or join a video call with up to 25 people.

  • We realize that a virtual conference poses a challenge for participation and that we are all joining from unique living/working situations. Unlike an in-person conference, we aren’t all in the same place, at the same time, away from other responsibilities. Consider if there are things you can do to create the learning and networking experience you are interested in.

  • The main conference days are being reserved for live discussion and interaction. After selecting the discussion sessions you are interested in, try to watch at least a few of the talks in advance and think of some questions or topics you’d be interested in hearing more about. The conference offers a unique chance to engage in a longer discussion about the session themes and ideas tying together multiple talks.

  • Don’t forget about posters and short videos! While we won’t have a formal poster session, you can engage in conversations with poster and short video presenters through the chat on their session.

  • The conference platform offers a number of options for networking – don’t be afraid to give them a try. You can easily follow up with a speaker through a one-on-one chat, join a group in the networking area, or meet someone new in the public chat.

Our exhibitors are experts in the field of ecological restoration and offer exciting services, products, and programs. We encourage you to visit the exhibit hall to learn more about their work through their links, videos, and files.

  • As with other parts of the conference platform, you can engage in public chats using the chat bar in an exhibitor’s booth.

  • You can also join one-on-one chats with booth representatives or request more information.

  • Exhibitors may run demonstrations, give presentations, or hold conversations in their booth through the “Join Live” button. You can see when these events are happening through posts on the public chat bar, conference-wide notifications, or direct invitations from the exhibitor.
